Historical Fashion: 1930's Day Ensemble

For the second installment of Historical Fashion (any name suggestions?), I wanted to share my love of Madeline Vionnet. She was a complete pioneer in bias-cut dresses, which flatter the body by smoothing the garment over it. Vionnet was a great inspiration of mine in college.

What I really loved about this particular outfit is that it appears so modern and minimal, even though it was made in 1933. It is the definition of timeless and definitely qualifies as Circa Style!

This is part of The Victoria and Albert Museum's collection in London. They really have a wonderful collection that I hope to check in person someday.

Late Summer Favorites

Hey everyone! So sorry for my absence- I've had the craziest couple of weeks! First, John (my boyfriend and photographer) was in Europe, then an earthquake on the East Coast, and we looked at and applied for a new apartment!

This type of outfit is definitely a go-to of mine during the late summer: a floral skirt with a defined waist and this cute ballerina-esque tee with flat sandals. Also, pictured is the new bag I picked up at J. Crew (on super-sale, of course). I absolutely love it!

Do you have any favorite staples for late summer?

I'll be back next week after Hurricane Irene passes through. Stay safe!

Rockaway Beach

One of my favorite things about New York City is that there are five boroughs to explore! And even though I've spent all of my life within an hour of Manhattan, there's still always new places to explore. Rockaway beach has been on my list for awhile now.

One of the most awesome things about Rockaway beach is Rockaway Taco! It's a tiny beach shack serving up what I can easily are the best tacos in NYC! They even grow some of their own produce on their roof, ensuring everything is as fresh as it gets.

The end of summer is (too) rapidly approaching, but I feel like it's barely begun because I've been so busy! I want more time for boating and the beach please!

Historical Fashion: 1951 Sailor Dress

Happy Monday everyone! I thought I'd start off the week by sharing this 1951 Norman Norell sailor dress! It is definitely one of the most darling things I've ever seen! Just perfect for summer on the coast!

This dress was featured by the Museum at FIT as the dress of the day. You can find the Museum at FIT on face book here. It is part of the FIDM Museum collection.

I have a huge passion for fashion history and I am considering making this part of my weekly content. What do you think?

Parkside

I absolutely love my neighborhood in the city! There's one area of it filled with antique, Tudor-styled homes and tree-lined streets. It's gorgeous! Recently, John and I discovered a great little park there- just a short walk from my apartment.

My mom bought this ring for me at an artisan's consignment shop up in New Paltz, NY while visiting my sister when she went to college there. It's very unique- I've never seen anything else quite like it.

I bought this dress for my trip to Europe last summer. I love the way the soft tonal effect of the floral is contrasted by the sharp geometric striped layout of the print. I've worn in in all seasons- in winter with tights, boots and a cardigan, with all different belts, and in summer as seen here.
It also has a sort of 70's vibe to it.
